You do not need professional equipment to take a compliant passport photo at home. A modern smartphone with at least a 12-megapixel rear camera produces sufficient resolution for any country's passport photo requirements. Mount the phone on a tripod or lean it securely on a shelf at face height, roughly 1.2 to 1.5 meters from the ground. Use the rear camera rather than the selfie camera, as front-facing lenses introduce barrel distortion that subtly warps facial proportions. Set a 3-to-5-second timer so you can position yourself before the shutter fires, and turn off all beauty mode, HDR, and portrait mode features that alter the image.

Lighting for a Professional Result

Lighting is the single most important factor separating acceptable passport photos from rejected ones. Position yourself facing a large window with indirect natural light during midday hours; direct sunlight creates harsh shadows that will cause rejection. If natural light is insufficient, place two matching desk lamps at 45-degree angles on either side of the camera, both at the same height and wattage, to create even illumination across both sides of the face. Avoid overhead-only lighting, which casts dark shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. Check the resulting image for shadow asymmetry: both cheeks should appear equally bright, and there should be no visible shadow on the background wall behind you.

Background Preparation

Most countries require either a white or light grey background, so start by identifying the correct color for your destination country before setting up. A plain white wall works for many countries, but inspect it for scuff marks, nail holes, or paint discoloration that will appear in the photo. For countries requiring light grey, tape a large sheet of neutral grey posterboard (available at art supply stores) to the wall. Stand at least 30 centimeters away from the background to prevent your body from casting a shadow onto it. If your wall has a slight texture, move the camera back and use a longer focal length or zoom to blur the texture into a smooth appearance while keeping your face sharp.

Positioning and Expression

Stand or sit with your shoulders square to the camera and your head perfectly straight, not tilted or rotated in any direction. Your eyes should be at the horizontal center of the frame, looking directly into the camera lens. Maintain a neutral expression with your mouth closed and your jaw relaxed; avoid any trace of a smile, as many countries' automated systems reject even a slight upturn of the mouth. Keep your arms at your sides so they do not enter the frame, and ensure both ears are visible if your country requires it. The camera should be positioned at exact eye level to avoid any upward or downward angle on the face.

What to Wear

Clothing choice directly affects whether your photo passes automated contrast checks. Wear a dark, solid-colored top that contrasts strongly with the white or light background. Avoid white, cream, or very light-colored shirts, as they blend into the background and make it difficult for software to detect the boundary of your shoulders. Steer clear of patterns, logos, stripes, and reflective materials. Do not wear hats, headbands, or head coverings unless your country permits them for religious reasons. Remove necklaces, large earrings, and any accessories near the face that could cause reflections or obscure facial features. A simple collared shirt in navy, black, or dark grey is the safest choice across all countries.

Common Mistakes and Final Checks

After taking the photo, zoom in to 100% on your screen and inspect for issues before printing. Check that both eyes are in sharp focus and that there is no motion blur anywhere on the face. Verify that the background is uniformly lit with no visible shadows, creases, or color variations. Measure the head-to-frame ratio by comparing the chin-to-crown distance against the total image height to ensure it falls within your country's required percentage. Confirm that the image resolution is at least 300 DPI at the print size you need. Finally, do not apply any post-processing filters, skin smoothing, or color grading; submit the photo exactly as captured.
