Bulgaria's passports are issued by the Ministry of Interior, through the Bulgarian Identity Documents directorate. The photo must measure 35x45mm and is normally taken on site at the application office, though printed photos are accepted at some locations. The standard calls for a plain light grey background and follows the ICAO 9303 biometric format used across the EU. Your face must be straight on with a neutral expression.

  • Face centred and looking straight at the camera, no tilt or turn.
  • Photo taken within the last six months so it matches your current look.
  • Even lighting across the face with no glare, hotspots, or shadows.
  • Glasses should be removed; if worn for medical reasons the eyes must be fully visible with no reflection.

  • Old photo that no longer resembles the applicant.

  • Most applicants just have the photo taken at the document office, which avoids size errors.
  • Wear clothing that contrasts with the grey background so your shoulders are defined.
  • Pull long hair back from the face so both edges of the face are visible.
  • Check that your eyes sit between roughly 56 and 69 percent up from the bottom edge.
  • If you wear glasses daily, bring a recent prescription note in case staff ask.
