USCIS Photo Specifications
US green card photos follow the same basic specifications as US passport photos: 2x2 inches (51x51mm) with a plain white background and the head measuring between 1 inch and 1-3/8 inches from chin to top of head. However, green card photos have additional USCIS-specific requirements beyond the State Department's passport photo rules. The photo must clearly show the applicant's current appearance, including any distinguishing marks, scars, or tattoos. Photos must be in color with full frontal face view. Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) requires two photos. Form I-90 (Renewal of Green Card) requires two photos. For all forms, write the applicant's name and USCIS receipt number (if available) lightly in pencil on the back of each photo. Photos should be lightly stapled to the form in the designated area, not taped or glued, as USCIS staff need to remove them for processing.
Photo Requirements for Family-Based Immigration
Family-based immigration petitions require photos from both the petitioner (the US citizen or permanent resident) and the beneficiary (the family member seeking immigration). Both individuals must submit separate, compliant 2x2 inch photos meeting all standard USCIS requirements. For married couples, wedding photos or couple photos are not acceptable substitutes. Each person must have an individual photo with a plain white background. For children included in immigration petitions, the same infant and child photo rules apply as for US passports. Photos of very young children may show a parent's hand supporting the child from behind, but no part of the parent should be visible in the final photo.
