Aperçu

Luxembourg passports are issued through the government portal guichet.lu and the Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office. The photo must be 35x45mm and meet the ICAO biometric standard used across the EU. A plain white or very light background is required, with the head filling about 70 to 80 percent of the height. Glasses are usually removed to avoid glare on the biometric image.

A plain white or very light, uniform background with no shadows or objects.

Exigences

  • Print size of exactly 35x45mm, or 413x531 pixels for digital use.
  • Head height of roughly 31 to 36mm, chin to crown, around 70 to 80 percent of the frame.
  • Plain white background, evenly lit with no shadows.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open.
  • Face centred and looking directly at the camera.
  • Photo taken within the last six months.
  • Sharp focus, natural colour, and even lighting on the face.
  • Glasses should be removed; if kept for medical reasons the eyes must be clear with no reflection.

Raisons courantes de rejet

  • Grey, coloured, or shadowed background instead of plain white.
  • Glare or reflection on glasses lenses.
  • Smiling, frowning, or open mouth.
  • Head incorrectly sized within the 35x45mm frame.
  • Hair covering the eyes or the outline of the face.
  • Old photo that no longer resembles the applicant.

Conseils

  • Use a white backdrop, since Luxembourg is stricter on background than some neighbours.
  • Remove glasses to sidestep the most common reflection problem.
  • Wear a top with some colour so it does not blend into the white background.
  • Check guichet.lu for the current spec before booking a photo.
  • Keep the chin level and eyes on the lens for correct framing.
