Nigeria's passport renewal process has shifted significantly toward online applications through the NIS portal, which accepts digital photo uploads with specific pixel and file size requirements. The NIS is particularly strict about head coverings and prohibits them entirely in passport photos regardless of religious affiliation, a policy that has been consistently upheld by the service.

Exigences
- Photo must be 40x50mm with the head centered and face occupying 70-80% of the frame height
- Background must be plain white or off-white with even lighting and no shadows
- Expression must be neutral with mouth closed and both eyes open looking at the camera
- No head coverings of any kind, including religious coverings, are permitted
- No glasses, tinted lenses, or decorative contact lenses in the photo
- Photo must be taken within the last 3 months and reflect current appearance accurately
- Both ears should be visible; hair must not obscure the face or ears
- Digital uploads to the NIS portal must be JPEG format, 200x200 to 600x600 pixels, under 200 KB

- Pull hair back behind the ears for a clean, compliant image
- For the NIS online portal, compress the JPEG to under 200 KB while maintaining at least 200x200 pixels
- Bring physical prints to your appointment even if you uploaded digitally, as NIS offices occasionally request them
