Overview
Costa Rica passports are handled by the Direccion General de Migracion y Extranjeria, with photos taken in the 50x50mm square (2x2 inch) format on a plain white background. Applicants usually submit two identical prints in colour, taken within the last six months. The face must be evenly lit with no shadows or glare, and selfies are not accepted. The head sits high in the square, similar to other 2x2 inch standards.
An even white background free of shadows, glare, and colour tint.
Requirements
- Square 50x50mm (2x2 inch) photo in full colour.
- Plain white background with even lighting.
- Two identical prints submitted with the application.
- Taken within the last six months.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open on the camera.
- No selfies; a proper front-facing portrait is required.
- Glasses off unless medically needed, with no glare on the lenses.
- Religious headwear only if the whole face stays visible.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Shadows or glare on the face or background.
- Selfie or casual snapshot rather than a portrait.
- Coloured or shaded background.
- Non-neutral expression or a turned head.
- Blur, low resolution, or bad exposure.
- Photo older than six months.
Tips
- Stand about a metre from the camera and face the light.
- Keep the wall well lit so no shadow forms behind you.
- Order two matching prints to cover the submission.
- Avoid white tops so your shoulders read against the backdrop.
- Hold a relaxed, neutral face with eyes wide open.
