Overview

Hungary's passports are handled by the Ministry of Interior through the district government offices (kormanyablak) and Hungarian missions abroad. The accepted photo is 35x45mm against a plain white or very light background, in line with EU and ICAO biometric standards. The head from chin to crown should measure around 34.5mm and fill roughly 70-80% of the frame height. Applicants are usually asked to bring two identical prints, and the appearance must match how you look on the day you apply.

Requirements

  • Photo must be 35x45mm, in colour, and taken within the past six months.
  • Background should be plain white or light grey with no shadows or patterns.
  • Face the camera squarely with a neutral expression and a closed mouth.
  • Head height from chin to hairline should be about 34.5mm, centred in the frame.
  • Both eyes must be open, clearly visible, and level, with no hair across them.
  • Remove glasses unless medically needed; if worn, no glare and no thick frames hiding the eyes.
  • Religious or medical head coverings are permitted provided the whole face stays uncovered.
  • Bring two identical prints on photo-quality paper, sharp and correctly exposed.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Shadows on the face or behind the head from poor lighting.
  • Tilted head or eyes that are not level with the camera.
  • Glare on spectacle lenses or frames covering part of the eyes.
  • Any smile or expression that shows teeth or changes the face shape.
  • Background that is off-colour, dirty, or has visible texture.
  • Outdated photo that no longer reflects current hairstyle or appearance.

Tips

  • Carry both prints unbent; the office keeps one and may scan the other.
  • Wear something that contrasts with white so your shoulders read clearly.
  • Tie long hair back to keep it off the cheeks and eyebrows.
  • Have the photographer confirm the 34.5mm chin-to-crown measure before printing.
  • Avoid heavy makeup or anything that alters your usual look in person.
