Overview

Maltese passports are issued by Identita (formerly Identity Malta), the national identity agency. The photo measures 35x45mm and must be a recent colour print on non-glossy, photo-quality paper against a plain white background. Malta requires two identical photographs with every application, and the head from chin to crown should fall between 32mm and 36mm. Photos must be original prints, not scanned or digitally altered.

A uniform white background with no shadows, patterns, or objects behind the head.

Requirements

  • Photo size is exactly 35x45mm (width x height), printed in colour on non-glossy photo paper.
  • Submit two identical recent prints with each passport application.
  • Photos must be taken within the last six months.
  • Head height from chin to crown must be between 32mm and 36mm.
  • Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression and mouth closed.
  • Keep both eyes open and clearly visible, with no hair across the eyes.
  • No sunglasses or tinted lenses; ordinary glasses must not obscure the eyes.
  • No head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must stay visible.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Background that is not plain white, or shows shadows behind the head.
  • Photos older than six months or showing an outdated appearance.
  • Glossy paper, low resolution, or scanned and copied prints.
  • Digitally retouched images that change the person's appearance.
  • Smiling, frowning, tilted head, or eyes closed or partly hidden.
  • Glare on glasses or tinted lenses hiding the eyes.

Tips

  • Use a matte, non-glossy paper as Identita specifically asks for it.
  • Light the face evenly so the white background stays clean with no grey cast.
  • Bring two identical copies so you are not turned away at submission.
  • Pin back any hair that drifts over the eyes or eyebrows.
  • If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, keep the chin, cheeks, and forehead clear.
